Pristina, Kosovo, 26 February 2008 - The Constitutional Commission Continues to Receive Comments on the Draft Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo


The Constitutional Commission continues to receive comments from citizens on the Draft Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo through meetings with the public, roundtable discussions with professional and interest groups, through media, and through its web site www.kushtetutakosoves.info. The Commission will continue organizing such meetings until March 2, 2008 to discuss with the public issues of concern and collect comments made on the Draft Constitution. In addition to the publication of the calendar of events organized by the Commission in the daily newspapers and on its website, the Commission is also  announcing its public meetings throughout the Kosovo municipalities on the main evening news.

The mechanisms established by the Constitutional Commission to receive and consider comments made by the public on the issues of concern related to the Draft Constitution will enable the Commission to seriously review every comment submitted by members of the public and organized groups of citizens.

The Constitutional Commission will start reviewing all comments received through the website and public meetings from Monday, March 3, 2008. Accordingly, the Commission invites members of the public, civil society and special and interest groups to submit their comments to the Commission by March 2, 2008, when the official comment period will close. As previously announced, members of the public and other interested groups may submit their comments through the Commission website or by sending letters to the Commission email address: info@kushtetutakosoves.info

The Final Draft Constitution incorporating approved changes proposed by the public will be posted on the website of the Constitutional Commission prior to the Assembly approval.

About the Constitutional Commission:

The Constitutional Commission charged with compiling the first draft of the Constitution of Kosovo was established by the President of Kosovo in accordance with the recommendations of UN Special Envoy Ahtisaari's Report on the Future Status of Kosovo submitted to the UN General Secretary.  The Commission reflects the diversity of Kosovo and is responsible for drafting a Constitution that represents the best interests of all people of Kosovo.
